Police say inattention on the part of a driver may have led to a wreck on Cleburne Highway in Weatherford around noon Sunday that left a Granbury woman dead.
Weatherford police reported that a van driven by 70-year-old John Tracy was northbound on State Highway 171 entering Weatherford when Tracy, attempting to avoid collision, braked hard for backed up traffic in the northbound lanes.
The Weatherford Democrat said Tracy reportedly lost control, and the van slid and swerved into oncoming traffic, where it was struck by a southbound 3/4-ton pickup pulling a trailer driven by 40-year-old Stephen Kaiser. Van passenger, 66-year-old Joan Tracy, was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled her death an accident due to multiple blunt force injuries sustained in the collision and ejection.
Police believe the woman was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck, according to Weatherford Police Cmdr. Chris Crawford. John Tracy was reportedly taken to an area hospital with serious injuries, though the Weatherford Democrat was unable to obtain an update on his condition Monday.
Kaiser was not transported to the hospital for any injuries, according to Crawford. The collision occurred in an area with a 55 mph speed limit, police said. The investigation by the Weatherford Police Advanced Accident Team was ongoing Monday.
