WHS graduate second place in the Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award

Baltimore Orioles closer and Weatherford High School graduate Zach Britton finished second in the first-ever Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year Award, tied for second place behind Kansas City Royals closer Greg Holland.

Major League Baseball announced the award winners before Game 2 of the World Series on Wednesday.

Britton stepped in as the Orioles’ closer in May and finished the season with 37 saves in 41 opportunities. The 26-year-old left-hander had a 1.65 ERA, struck out 62 batters and allowed 46 hits in 76 1/3 innings.
