Locals scammed by fake IRS agent

The Weatherford Police Department is warning citizens about a scam where a caller claims to work for the IRS. Several local citizens have reported that a caller tries to convince the victim they are legitimate agents of the IRS in an attempt to solicit money for unpaid taxes. The caller generally uses scare tactics against the victim by threatening criminal action or jail.

The caller demands a prepaid debit card, wire transfer or a credit card number for payment. If the person doesn’t comply, the caller threatens to arrest or deport the target, or take away their driver’s license or business.

Thousands of victims across the country have lost money to these tax scam artists. If you have been a victim of this type of scam or any other form of fraudulent con, please contact the Weatherford Police Department at (817) 598-4310.
