With the extreme drought continuing in our part of Texas, some Possum Kingdom Lake residents are unhappy about a plan to pump water out of the lake to the city of Abilene.
Abilene city officials recently approved building a pipeline to pump between 4 million and 14 million gallons of water from Possum Kingdom Lake as part of that city’s second-stage short-term drought strategy.
No contract has yet been established with the Brazos River Authority to purchase water from the lake.
Abilene hopes to have a contract signed by summer.
The plan to draw water from P.K. doesn’t settle too well with the Possum Kingdom Lake Association.
The association told the Mineral Wells Index they’re worried about the amount of water Abilene might use from the lake and how well-monitored its use would be.
The lake is currently at 62 percent capacity.
