The Weatherford College baseball team is now ranked No. 2 in the nation, according to the Division I rankings released Wednesday by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).
The ranking is the highest in the program’s 13-year history. Last week, the Coyotes were ranked fifth.
Weatherford is 18-3 overall and 6-2 in North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference play.
"We’re honored to be recognized, obviously, but we want to be there at the end of the season," said Head Coach Jeff Lightfoot. "Our goal is to compete for a national championship, so there’s a lot of work to do. But this is great for the kids and the program as a whole."
The Coyotes won the first eight games of the season and 10 of their last 12. Five of their 18 wins have come against nationally-ranked teams, including three victories over No. 15 Midland and two over No. 19 New Mexico Junior College.
The rankings, sponsored by Marucci Sports, are based off team performance through Sunday, March 15.
