Man presumed drowned in Cartwright Park

Law enforcement personnel spent the night searching for a missing man presumed drowned in Sunshine Lake at Cartwright Park in Weatherford.

According to the Weatherford Police Department, two men were fishing in an inflatable boat with a trolling motor last night. Apparently one of the men stood up to put on a life jacket and fell out of the boat. The second man jumped in the water to rescue him, but the boat’s trolling motor pulled it away from the men, all the way to the shore. The men yelled for help and a witness on the shore jumped into the boat and trolled back to men, but by then one of the men had submerged and hasn’t been seen since. The missing man is approximately 20 years old and apparently couldn’t swim.

Weatherford Fire Department personnel searched for the man for several hours, to no avail. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officials are on the scene this morning searching for the victim. Cartwright Park is closed in the meantime.
