Two baseball players with local ties have signed big contracts to play in 2017.
Weatherford High School graduate Zach Britton has agreed to an $11.4 million deal to avoid salary arbitration with the Baltimore Orioles.
Former Weatherford College pitcher Jake Arrieta avoided arbitration by reaching a one-year, $15.6375-million deal Friday with the Chicago Cubs.
Both deals were for the 2017 season only.
Britton had a 0.54 ERA — the lowest ever for a pitcher who worked at least 50 innings in a season — as he finished fourth in American League Cy Young Award voting and won the AL Mariano Rivera Reliever of the Year Award.
Arrieta went 18-8 with a 3.10 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 31 starts in 2016. His contract expires at the end of the 2017 season.
